The Dux was typically a military commander appointed by the Emperor to lead a specific region's army, while the Comes was a high-ranking official responsible for civil administration and military command. Both positions required individuals to demonstrate their ability to maintain order, protect the empire's interests, and uphold the Emperor's authority. Promotion to these prestigious roles often involved a mix of merit, connections, and successful military campaigns. **

This creates a dialogue between the two voices, with the subject being passed back and forth throughout the composition. The length of the Dux and Comes can vary depending on the composer and the specific fugue, but they are usually of equal duration to maintain the balance and structure of the piece. **
